SAUGERTIES…Walter L. Maher, 98, of 155 Main St. and formerly of the Old Patch Rd., passed away Monday, January 7, 2019 at the Kingston Hospital. He was born in the Bronx on June 12, 1920 to the late Walter and Josephine Cavanaugh Maher. A Veteran of World War II he served in the US Army/Air Corps stationed in North Africa and the Middle East.
He was employed for over 24 years as a aircraft draftsman at Grumman Aircraft in Bethpage, L.I. retiring in 1973. During that time he was a resident of Ridgewood and Woodhaven, Queens. After his retirement from Grumman he relocated to his life long summer home in Saugerties and was employed at LoDolce Machine and later at Hucktrol.
He was a member of the Saugerties American Legion Post 72, St. John the Evangelist Church and the Saugerties Knights of Columbus. He was a former member of the Saugerties Elks Lodge #2574.
Survivors include his beloved nieces and nephews: Kathleen Friedman, Mary Ann Maher, Ellen (Oliver) Scheerer, Alan (Dale) Greczynski, Nikkia (Matthew) Kolbinski, Alan (Alina) Greczynski II, Bernadette, Daniel, Matthew Maher and Marilyn Scott. His loving stepchildren: Donald (Karen), Walter (Kathy), Kenneth (Linda), William (Carol) O’Connor and Carolyn (Charles) Reiser, step grandchildren: Steven O’Connor and Sara Vroman. Several other step grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren also survive. He was predeceased by his first wife, Rita Bechtold Maher, second wife, Rita O’Connor Maher, his brothers, Thomas Emmett and Joseph Maher, nephew William Maher, niece, Eileen Maher and step son James O’Connor.
His Funeral Procession will form Friday 9:15 am at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home Inc., cor. of John and Lafayette Sts., Saugerties. Thence to St. John the Evangelist Church where at 10:00 AM a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered. Burial with military honors will follow in the St. Mary of the Snow Cemetery.
