Antoinette Babb, 95, of 155 Main St., died Saturday June 1, 2024, at Northern Dutchess Hospital after a brief illness. For 85 years she lived at 125 West Bridge Street. Born October 11, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Pasquale and Philomena Salvione Mauro.
Antoinette was a graduate of the Benedictine Hospital Our Lady School of Nursing, Class of 1949. She received her bachelor’s degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. She continued her education by receiving her master’s degree in nursing education from Teacher’s College Columbia University in NYC.
Her career included being a hospital nurse, Head OR Nurse, a NYS Department of Health employee & an RN for home health aid agencies. Teaching at both Rutger’s University and Russell Sage College was the highlight of her career.
In addition to her career, Antoinette believed in the importance of community involvement. She was a member of the St. Mary’s Altar Rosary Society, Saugerties Senior Citizen’s Club, Saugerties Village Beautification Committee, Saugerties Elks Auxiliary, New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), Support Our Servicepersons (SOS) & past president of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) local chapter. The Ulster County Office of the Aging RSVP program afforded her the opportunity to be a pen pal to an elementary school student. She was a Republican Committeeperson, also being named the 2012 Republican of the Year. As an American Legion Auxiliary Lifetime Member, she was a past Third District President; Past Ulster County President and Chaplain; and Lamouree-Hackett Unit 72 Chaplain, President, & Co-President. For years every February, she presented the Chapel and Four Chaplains Program to the community. A member & past president of the Saugerties Society of Little Gardens. She was a chairman & officer at both the district and state levels of Federated Garden Clubs. Her love of horticulture inspired her to achieve the statuses of Flower Show Judge, Landscape Design Critic and Master Gardener.
In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by husbands Edward Greco & James Carlock Babb and sisters Mary (Thomas) Saccoman and Amy (Tony) Fabiano.
Survivors include Cynthia Babb Rothermel, her daughter; Penny Rothermel, her daughter-in-law and Alan Rothermel and Shannon Gilhuly, her grandson and fiancée. Additionally, she is survived by many nieces & nephews and great nieces & great nephews, especially Tommy John Walsh, great nephew and Olivia & Sophia McCasland, great-great nieces. She is also survived by special friends Lorna Silinovich, Anne Chubb, Joan Moneghan, & Vicky Turk.
The family would also like to thank the Northern Dutchess Hospital Second Floor Med-Surg Nursing Staff and Dr. Levine for the compassionate care given during Antoinette’s final days.
Her Funeral Procession will form 9:15 am Friday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc. Cor. of John & Lafayette Sts., Saugerties thence to St. Mary of the Snow RC Church where at 10:00 AM a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Friends will be received Thursday 2-4 & 7-9 PM.
