Bette J. Reed

Bette J. Reed, 72, died Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at the Westchester Medical Center after injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born on May 22, 1951, in Albany, NY, Bette's life was a testament to the power of strong will and generosity that she extended to everyone around her.

Bette's early years in Albany were filled with the love and guidance of her mother Hilda VanWormer Reed, who predeceased her. She grew up alongside her siblings, finding joy and lifelong lessons in the close-knit family environment. Though her brothers Robert Reed, Gary Reed, and sister Donna Weaver have passed, her brother Douglas Reed, Sr., remains to honor her memory.

Her journey through life was shared with her loving life partner, William Thornton, whose presence was a source of continuing friendship and support. Bette's legacy continues through her devoted daughters, Dawn (Frank) Coddington of Stone Ridge and Samantha (Tyler) Williams of Saugerties, who will forever cherish the wisdom and love their mother imparted. The light of her life shone brightly on her eight grandchildren, Chantelle, Jordan, Hannah, Frank, Georgie, McKenzie, Coralynn, and Kaydence, each of whom brought her immeasurable joy; in addition to many nieces and nephews. 

Bette's life was marked by her passion for animals, the love of her family, and her endless generosity for those she loved. She was a benefactor to charities of all types, again showing her generosity for all things she was passionate about. Her interests were diverse, but her intent was singular—to spread laughter and aid wherever she could.

Those who knew Bette would describe her as strong, independent, caring, loving, helpful, and genuine—words that only begin to capture the essence of her character. Her absence will be deeply felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.  Bette's journey through life was a beautiful testament to the power of love, and she will be profoundly missed by all who were fortunate enough to cross her path.

Her Funeral Service will be held 10 am Saturday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home Inc., corner of John and Lafayette Sts., Saugerties. Burial will follow in the Blue Mountain Cemetery. Her visitation will be held 5-8 pm Friday. A memorial tribute book will be organized using photos and condolences shared at SeamonWilseyFuneralHome.
