Donald A. Minkler

SAUGERTIES…. Donald A. Minkler, Jr., 85, of Market St. died Thursday, December 28, 2023 at the Health Alliance Hospital, Mary’s Ave. Kingston.   Born June 14, 1938 in Saugerties he was the son of the late Donald and Olive Breithaupt Minkler.   A veteran of the US Marine Corps he served during the Korean War. 

A lifelong area resident, Don was a active member of the South Side Mens Club and in 2004 was inducted into the Saugerties Sports Hall of Fame.  His athletic skills spanned several sports and years.  In bowling he was a member of the Saugerties Bowlers Assoc. where he was on championship teams for 9 years and in 1980 rolled a perfect 300 game.   He won a championship and was a member of the SAA Halfcourt Basketball League and the SAA Softball League for many years where he pitched.   Off the athletic courts and fields, Don was a member of the Blue Kats Mens Club.  As a member of the Blue Kats he was a co-chairman of the Holiday Basket Program and was chairman for many years for the Christmas decorations display at the “Rock Cut.”  He was a member of the Saugerties American Legion Post #72.

Predeceased by his beloved wife, Shirley in 2006, and son-in-law Dominick 2022, survivors include a daughter: Donna DeGregoria of Glasco, two sons: Donald A. “Gus” Minkler, III of Alabama and Derek (Jodie) Minkler of N. Greenbush.  Three sisters: Judy Mattox, Olive (Dennis) Doyle and Karen Winters all of Saugerties.  Eight grandchildren: Mary DeGregoria, Deanna Hawthorne (Ryan) Jessica Tilley (Derek), Donald A., IV, Christian, Morgan (Logan), Makenzie and Miranda Minkler.  Nine great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.   The family would like to thank the amazing staff on S-1 at Golden Hill Nursing and Rehab Center for the exceptional love and care provided during his stay there.

His Funeral Service will be held 10:00 AM Wednesday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc. Cor. of John & Lafayette Sts., Saugerties.   Burial will follow with military honors in the Blue Mt.
