SAUGERTIES - Edward R. Mastracchio died at the Health Alliance Hospital in Kingston on April 9, 2025 after a long illness. Born in Brooklyn, NY on October 17, 1935 he was the son of the late Edward and Margaret Abbott Mastracchio. A U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War Era, he served in the Pacific aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Point Cruz. He received an accommodation for being among the first on the scene to put out a large fire on the vessel in August 1954, which originated from a massive explosion. During his time in the Navy, he was fortunate to hitch a ride into Long Beach, CA with actor Victor Mature. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in Seattle Washington in September1956, he returned to Brooklyn where he met and married Angela Lauria in 1957, and raised four children.
He was one of many workers who painted the then newly constructed Verrazano Narrows Bridge and Shea Stadium, both in 1964. He was employed by the NYC Board of Education in the Betterment Program which was begun by then Mayor Robert F. Wagner, from 1964 to 1979.
He moved with his family to the Bronx in 1971 where he lived for seven years before settling in Saugerties in 1978, also home to generations of family where he had previously vacationed. After moving to Saugerties he was employed by the Kingston City Schools District from 1982 to 1995, retiring that year as a maintenance man.
He was a past Commander of Saugerties American Legion Post 72 and often enjoyed playing Euchre with his friends and fellow veterans during his tenure there.
His favorite pastime was playing golf and would often hang out at the Exchange in Saugerties, being a popular patron there for many years.
He was predeceased by his wife Angela in January of 2022 and a daughter Debra in February of 2006.
Survivors include two daughters, Anne Procario of Cortlandt Manor, and Evelyn Lauria De Rose; a son Eddie Masters both of Saugerties; two grand daughters Danielle Paccione of Los Angeles and Catherine Paccione of NYC; a brother Roger Mastracchio of Long Island; two nieces Dawn Mastracchio of Oceanside and Lisa (Mark) Lustig of Howard Beach; two great-nieces and many cousins.
His Funeral Procession will form 9:15 am Saturday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc. Cor. of John & Lafayette Sts., Saugerties thence to St. Mary of the Snow RC Church where at 10:00 AM a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered. Interment with military honors will be held in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends will be received on Friday 2-4 and 7-9 PM.
