SAUGERTIES....Elizabeth “Jean” Melville, Elizabeth, who is “Jean” to all who knew her, 87, of 155 Main Street, passed peacefully on March 8, 2021 at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie. She was born on June 10, 1933, in Prattsville, NY she was the daughter of the late Richard and Dolly Quinn.
Jean was a graduate of Windham Ashland Jewett Central School, class of 1950. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph’s/St. Mary’s Church. Jean retired from Verizon as an operator in 1982; she then went on to a second retirement from Adam’s Fairacre Farms, floral department in 2002.
She was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, The Red Hatters, the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 72, a member of the Saugerties Senior Club, where she served as 2nd Vice President and a member of the 1st Capital Travel Club. Jean loved playing Mahjong with her weekly group as well as cards and bingo and really enjoyed her casino trips! Her family at 155 Main Street gave her lots of joy and she found her Peace at the river.
Her greatest gift was her love for her family, which she has passed on to her children, grandchildren and to those she touched in her extended family. She was Mom, Nanny (to so many), Gramma Jean, Sister, Aunt Jean, Mom Jovi and Friend.
Jean was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Ross, her sister’s Helen Fitzharris, Kathryn Foley, and brother William Quinn. She is survived by her daughter’s Patty (Kevin) Olson, Peggy Melville, Laurie (Ralph) Deitrick, her son, Michael (Dianne) Melville; grandchildren Scott Melville of Boca Raton, Florida, Michelle Melville of Saugerties and Dakota Olson, of Indio, California; nephews, Patrick Fitzharris of Georgia, Patrick (Joanne) Melville, Tommy Melville, Bob (Marylee) Melville and niece Shelia Melville, all of Saugerties.
Thank you to Ten Broeck Center, Foxhall Unit and special thanks to Donna Hatfield of Vassar Brothers Hospital for her caring and compassion. She could not have done more for Jean’s family at this difficult time and we are forever grateful to her.
Her Funeral Procession will form 9:15 AM Saturday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc., Cor. of John & Lafayette Sts. Saugerties thence to St. Mary of the Snow RC Church where at 10:00 AM a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered. Friends will be received Friday 2:00- 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 PM. Face masks and social distancing rules to be observed. Burial will follow in the Blue Mt. Cemetery.
