Frederick “Fred” Wind of Saugerties passed away on April 13th, 2025 at the Health Alliance Hospital in Kingston, NY. He passed peacefully with family by his side.
Fred was born in Brooklyn in 1931 to Diedrich and Maria Wind (née Stubenvoll) but spent much of his childhood in Chicago, IL before his family relocated to Saugerties, NY, and opened the Winds Diner in Palenville.
Corporal Frederick Wind proudly served in the Korean War as an army artilleryman taking part in the battles of Heartbreak Ridge and Pork Chop Hill. His commanding officers recognized his aptitude, and it was in Korea that Fred lost half of his hearing but none of his courage and humor as he trained his fellow soldiers on the use and maintenance of heavy artillery under the temporary rank of sergeant.
After serving our country, Fred worked as a carpenter with his father. With his own hands, he built several homes in the Saugerties area which still stand to this day. Fred always had a heart for service. He became the Fire Chief of the Saxton Fire Department after years of putting out raging building fires and smoldering ground fires. Then, determined to protect and serve, he was an officer in the Saugerties Police Department. He then worked many years as a mail carrier, eventually becoming the Postmaster of the Saugerties Post Office. Finally, he founded Winds Realty and was a well-loved local realtor until retiring in his late 70s.
Fred loved fishing, as well as hunting deer with his trusty crossbow. He was also known to frequent casinos and the local Quick Stop affectionately known as “John’s”. He was known for his sincere kindness and contagious humor and had a knack for making others smile wherever he went.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Amy Wind, brother Richard “Dick” Wind, and stepson Anthony Cruise. He is survived by his children Laurie Scarselli of Saugerties and Fred Wind of Saugerties, bonus children Amy and Nancy Cruise of Minnesota, and grandchildren Heather Dodd (Jake) of Saugerties and Steven Scarselli of Palm Coast, FL. He is also survived by many bonus grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Upon Fred’s request, there will be no services. Cremation will follow. In place of flowers, donations can be made to the local Saugerties VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Post 5034. Arrangements are under the direction of the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc. Cor. of John & Lafayette Sts., Saugerties. Expressions of condolence may be shared with the family on Fred's Tribute Wall at SeamonWilseyFuneralHome.com
