George L. Cox died peacefully at Hudson Valley Hospice House in Hyde Park, NY on Monday June 30, 2025, at the age of 92. Born on December 9, 1932, he was the son of the late George J. Cox and Mary A. Cox. George was a lifetime Saugerties resident. He attended St. Mary’s school, and he graduated from Saugerties High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Upon his return, he began work at IBM in Kingston, where he would spend his entire career. During his time there, he received his bachelor’s degree in business from Marist College in 1971.
George, or “Bud,” as he was known by his family, had a lifelong interest in travel, theater, cooking, and gardening. He took classes at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, periodically went to New York City to see shows, traveled to Ireland twice, and other destinations — Nova Scotia, Nevada, and Florida to name a few. He worked his garden far longer than his nieces thought he should, but it made him happy to care for the flowers.
George loved Maine and vacationed in the Kennebunk area for years. After his retirement from IBM in the early nineties, he purchased a home in Kennebunk. For the last thirty years, he spent a portion of every summer there. He enjoyed walking along the beach, exploring local art and history, and attending performances at the Ogunquit Playhouse.
Most of all, George looked after his family. He took care of his parents in their final years and made sure the needs of his aunts and uncle were taken care of as well. He cooked all the family holiday meals for many years. After George’s uncle passed, he took over Lynch’s Marina, which was in the family from 1938 through 2014.
George is survived by his four nieces Colleen Cox, of Wynantskill, NY; Maureen (Randy Schubert) Cox, of Olean, NY; Meggin Cox, of Alleghany, NY; and Sharon (Matt Ciak) Cox, of Portland, CT. He was predeceased by his brother, Cornelius Cox (Neil), and his parents George J. Cox and Mary A. Cox.
Calling hours will be held on July 6 from 2 pm to 4 pm, at Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, corner of John and Lafayette Streets, Saugerties. A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Mary’s of the Snow Church at 36 Cedar Street, Saugerties on July 7, at 11am. Burial with military honors will follow in the St. Mary of the Snow Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Hudson Valley Hospice.
