George Heidcamp, passed away peacefully at his residence in Saugerties, NY, on August 9, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on August 1, 1946, in Kingston, NY, George lived a life marked by service, commitment, and love for his community and family.
Predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Regina Wright Heidcamp, his daughter, Deborah Benn, and his brother, Joseph Heidcamp, George's legacy continues through his beloved wife of 48 years, Arnette, his son George Heidcamp, his daughter Teresa (Bill) Schirmer, and his grandchildren, Emily, Ryan, C.J., Cody, Casey, Cassidy, and Michaela. His brothers William Heidcamp and Sean Sullivan, along with his sister Joann Beesmer, carrying forward the memories of a life well-lived.
George's legacy is one of honor and bravery, having served as a Town of Saugerties Police Officer for 37 years. His courage and dedication to the safety of others earned him numerous certificates and citations. He was a respected leader, serving as the PBA President for eighteen years, and his commitment to public service extended to his involvement with the Diaz Ambulance Board of Directors for six years. His passion for education and community development was evident through his nine-year tenure on the Saugerties Central School Board, including two years as Vice President and six as President of the Board.
A proud US Army veteran, George served his country with distinction in Korea and Germany. His love for his nation was matched by his love for his local community. As Chairman of the Conservative Party for thirty-five years and Vice-chairman of the Ulster County Conservative Party for four years, where his leadership and vision were instrumental in shaping the political landscape. His passion for politics was rooted in a deep-seated belief in the power of individuals to effect change and his desire to contribute to the greater good.
George's commitment to the community was further demonstrated by his successful co-chairing of the fundraising efforts for the Small World Playground, raising $75,000. He was an active member of the Saugerties Blue Kats Men's Club and the Saugerties American Legion Post #72.
Family and friends may gather Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home Inc., corner of John and Lafayette Sts. His Funeral Service will be held 10 AM Wednesday. Interment with military honors will follow in the Trinity Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Saugerties Animal Shelter.
