CLIFTON PARK....George E. Vizvary, 87, of Clifton Park, NY, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, June 10, 2023. He was born in Újpest, Hungary on April 14, 1936 to the late Imre and Ilona Vizvary.
He was the loving husband of Jean Vizvary for 32 years of marriage; father of four daughters, Dora Swan (Peter Kenyon) of Malta, Judith Iapoce of Eastham, MA, Patricia Vizvary (Nikolas Kindervater) of Altamont and Erika Thompson (Christopher) of Clifton Park; caring grandfather of Kelly, Ryan, John, Samuel, Maggie, Blair, Colin, Lukas and Leo; and,-great grandfather of Ava, Alexander, Poppy, Daisy, Emilyn and Liam.
George escaped from Hungary on foot through the Iron Curtain during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, landing in Saugerties, NY. He was recruited by IBM in Kingston, NY, through the Hungarian Refugee Program, where he worked for over a decade. Additionally, George had a long teaching and coaching career at Ulster County Community College. During his teaching career at UCCC, he rose to the position of the Engineering Program Chair. As a soccer coach, Vizvary had a knack for recruiting young talent and developing them into strong athletes and men. During his time at UCCC he brought the Ulster Senators to 1977 and 1978 National Championship wins. When he retired from UCCC in 2010, Vizvary had registered the most wins in junior college history, recording a 534-159-28 mark at the school. In his later years, he was also the Director of Coaching for the boys and girls soccer programs at The Mount Academy, developing the programs from the ground up and bringing them four State Championships. Coach Vizvary was inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame in 2007 and received the Walt Chyzowych Lifetime Achievement Award for a distinguished soccer career in 2015.
George had a great love for the outdoors and spent time gardening and making snowmen with his children and grandchildren. He developed a talent for Hungarian cooking through which he shared his culture. He entertained many audiences over the years with stories of his escape from Hungary and many other adventures, oftentimes including sound effects and hand gestures. George was a character; he was also known for his humorous words of encouragement to his children, grandchildren and team players.
His Visitation will be at Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home (45 John Street, Saugerties, NY 12477) on Wednesday June 14th, 2023 from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm. On Thursday June 15th, 2023 George's Funeral Service will be held at The Mount Academy Chapel (1001 Broadway, Esopus, NY 12429) at 11am followed by a reception in The Mount Academy Community Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family has established a National Scholarship Program for college bound high school seniors who played soccer in high school. Further details will be forthcoming.
