James R. Cook, a man known for his infectious humor and boundless love, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2025, at Kingston Hospital. He was born on October 3, 1947, in Sebring, Florida.
James proudly served his country as a member of the US Army during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he became a Parole Officer until retirement. Then he continued to serve his community as a school bus driver for First Student, where he was not just a driver but a guardian and friend to countless students who were fortunate enough to start and end their school days in his care.
His commitment to community involvement was evident through his active membership in the Kingston American Legion Post #150, where he shared bonds of fellowship with fellow veterans. James was also a proud member of the NRA and the Phoenicia Fish and Game Club, where he enjoyed the camaraderie and the great outdoors.
Those who knew James would often speak of his big heart. He was the kind of man who would literally give the shirt off his back to help someone in need. His sense of humor was even bigger, with an infectious laugh and a knack for storytelling that could lighten the heaviest of hearts.
James is predeceased by his life partner Donna Bard, whom he loved beyond words.
Although he never had children of his own, he found a family in his close friend Heather Bier, whom he lovingly referred to as his daughter, her husband Michael, and his cherished granddaughter, Brianna. The bond they shared was as deep as any traditional family, and the love and laughter they exchanged were the highlights of his days.
His Funeral Service with military honors will be held 7:45 PM Friday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home Inc. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 PM Friday. To share a memory please visit his Tribute Wall at SeamonWilseyFuneralHome.com
