SAUGERTIES.... James A. “Chief” Juliano, 95, of West Birchwood Dr. died Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at his residence surrounded by his family. Born July 25, 1926 in Carbondale, PA. he was the son of the late Joseph and Frances Feringio Guiliano.
A Veteran of the US Navy, he served during World War II, initially with The 38th Seabees on Tinian Island as a member of “The Dynamite Gang” used in the construction of the airfields. He later recalled being present for the departure of the “Enola Gay” on her historic mission. The 38th then entered Japan and later Guam where he assisted in highway construction and became a Motor Machinist's Mate. In the Korean War, he was deployed on minesweepers tasked with keeping harbors open. His service continued as part of the blockade during the Cuban Missile Crisis and as a Navy Recruiter during Viet Nam where he would achieve the rank of Chief Petty Officer (CPO). During his many years as a Navy Reservist, he was also employed at Gateway Industries in Kingston as a counselor. He often spoke fondly of his time with Gateway. Active in the community, he was a 3rd and 4th Degree member of the Saugerties Knights of Columbus Council #4536 serving as Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator. He was a member of the Saugerties American Legion Post and the Kingston VFW Post. He participated in a recent Hudson Valley Honor Flight trip to Washington DC.
Survivors include his wife the former, Rosemary Festa, with whom he enjoyed life during their nearly 68 years of marriage; two sons: Joseph (Dianne) and James (Wendy) Juliano; four grandchildren: Cara Juliano, Sandra (John) Masselli, Joey Juliano and Lea (Alexander) McHugh and recently his first great-grandchild, Julian McHugh; sister, Angie Hitchko and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings: Rose, Jessie, Jennie, Frank, Paul and Joseph Juliano.
His Funeral Procession will form 9:15 AM Saturday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc. Cor. of John & Lafayette Sts., Saugerties thence to St.Mary of the Snow RC Church where at 10:00 AM a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered. Friends will be received on Friday 7- 9:00 PM.
