Jerry Bucklen Obituary

Jerry C. Bucklen, 86 passed away on May 11, 2023. He was a long time resident of Barclay Heights in Saugerties from 1976 – 2022. He was born on April 14, 1937 to Dora Maymie Bales and Bertie C. Bucklen in Raven Virginia. He was one of 12 children all but 1 who predeceased him survived by only his sister Peggy “Pete” Tester. He was a graduate of Richlands High School in Richlands, Virginia home to the Blue Tornados in 1955. He was a veteran of the US Army and was honorably discharged after serving from 1956-1958. After his military service, he attended and graduated in 1962 from Virginia Tech with a bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering. He was 1 of 4 brothers that became “VT Hokies”. One of Jerry’s legacies following in the Virginia Tech tradition of service “Ut Prosim” – that I may serve” was the establishment of the Bucklen Family Scholarship for Mining Engineering undergraduate students. He established this with his brother Oakley Bert (O.B.) many years ago. He was also a graduate of the University of Missouri at Rolla with a Master’s degree in Engineering Management. He had a long career as an engineer / plant chemist in the cement industry. Jerry was predeceased by his wife Mamie Howery Bucklen in April of 2022. He is survived by 2 sons and their families. Vincent and wife (Nancy Cashara) of Blacksburg, VA; Patrick and wife (Patty Petramale) of Irvine, CA, 5 grandchildren Elizabeth and Peter Bucklen of Blacksburg, VA , Jackson, Alec and Victoria Bucklen of Irvine, CA and 2 great grandchildren Ares “Bubba” and Faye Agnes Renner of Blacksburg, VA. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, canoeing, watching his favorite “Football Hokies” compete, running 10K’s and later as he aged into it walking. No formal service is planned and his ashes will be returned to Virginia, burial will be private.
