SAUGERTIES - John "Jack" W. Norton, Jr., 84, of Birchwood Dr. W, died on May 4, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Rochester, NY to the late John, Sr. and Dorothy (Lucas) Norton. He graduated from McQuaid Jesuit High School, Class of 1959, attended the University of Notre Dame, and ultimately graduated from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics. In 1964, after his college graduation, John was conscripted in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War as a Staff Sergeant, and worked stateside on a special project. After an honorable discharge, he accepted a position as a Computer Programmer with IBM (Kingston) and relocated his family to Saugerties in 1972. The Catskill mountains and the Hudson River Valley were a strong draw for him. He was the 2nd President of the Saugerties Lighthouse Conservancy and worked diligently to restore the Saugerties Lighthouse to working order. During the winter, he loved to photograph and sail ice boats as a member of the Hudson River Ice Yacht Club. He was a long-time parishioner of St. Mary of the Snow Catholic Church in Saugerties, NY. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marge; his beloved children, Theresa (Tony) Mrozik, Christine King, and J. Michael Norton; two grandchildren Ava (Peter) Mrozik-Tipton and Jade King; one brother, three sisters and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation hours will be Friday, May 8th from 5-7 pm at Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home in Saugerties, NY. His Funeral Procession will form 9:15 am Saturday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home Inc. Procession will continue to St. Mary of the Snow Church for a 10 am Mass of Christian Burial. Burial with military honors will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery, Saugerties, NY. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Ulster County SPCA and Hudson Valley Hospice.
