CATSKILL - Karyn Marie (nee Bynum) Maier, 63, passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at Columbia Memorial Health in Hudson, NY. Her pain and suffering ended as she was carried into the arms of the angels who passed from her life on earth before her. Her beloved husband Andy and her son Aaron were with her until the end. Karyn was born August 22,1960 at Horton Hospital in Middletown, NY and was raised by her parents, Charles and Winifred Bynum in Goshen. She was a 1978 graduate of Goshen High School. After high school, Karyn pursued higher education at Westchester Community College but it wasn't until much later that she developed the passion for self educating and became a lifelong learner in many subjects. She spent her first few years out of school as a musician, sharing her beautiful soprano voice at gigs throughout the northeast. She often found work as a legal secretary in law offices in Kingston and elsewhere in Ulster County, but over 20 years ago she decided working for someone else would never be her cup of tea so she turned to another of her creative passions, writing. She had two books published; both by Storey Publishing and both subsequently translated into Spanish, Russian, Portuguese and Japanese and sold in dozens of countries. In 2008 she wrote " The Naturally Clean Home" now in its third printing, featuring 150 super easy Herbal Formulas for Green Cleaning. The following year, Storey published her book "Happy Baby, Happy You" featuring 500 ways to nurture the bond with your baby.
From then on Karyn became a regular contributor to magazines like Good Housekeeping and numerous health and medical magazines/journals as well as scripts for a variety of radio talk shows nationwide. She originated and successfully operated an herbal website which can be found at herbalmusings.com She provided countless articles about the use of herbs in our everyday lives and how to concoct healthy recipes to reduce her reader's dependence on artificial and/or processed foods and household products full of potentially harmful ingredients.
Karyn was uniquely talented in all forms of art, music, literature and she always marched to her own drum.
As one of her lifelong friends said in a condolence post this week that "Karyn was a true child of nature, an independent soul who followed her own strong moral compass despite adversity. Born kind, loving, brave, and sassy, she remained that way always and will remain so forever."
Karyn was predeceased by her parents, her niece, Ashley Wade and several very close friends.
Left to carry her soul in their hearts are her husband of 31 years, Andreas John Maier, along with her children Andreas John Jr. (Lindsay), Michael Steven and Aaron Brandon (Caitlin) and grandchildren Thomas Darwin Maier and Haley Caroline Maier. Also missing her dearly are her siblings, Jan Bynum(Deb), Brenda Kujawski (Andy), and Wendy Bynum-Wade(Doug); joined by her nieces Sarah Kujawski Banquero, Amy Sayej(Will) and nephews Andy C. Kujawski, Luke Wade, Kyle Bynum and Michael(Nicole) and Matt Romer (Nadine). Her mother in law, Joan Maier. She will also be missed by grandnieces, grandnephews and numerous cousins from NC, GA, AL, OK, TEX and MO and a cadre of friends too numerous to list.
Her Funeral Service will be held 10:00 AM Saturday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc., Cor. of John & Lafayette Sts., Saugerties where friends will be received on Friday from 7-9 PM. Expressions of condolence may be shared with the family on Karyn's Tribute Wall at SeamonWilseyFuneralHome.com
Godspeed Karyn from all whose lives you've touched in any way.
