SAUGERTIES - Mahlon H. "Mel" Pfeil, 87, of Finger St., died Saturday, May 9, 2026 in the arms of his wife, Gail, and with his step son and care giver, Jackie W. Peeler, Jr., by his side. Born January 28, 1939 in Catskill to the late Benjamin and Anna Pfeil. Upon his graduation from Catskill HS he was recruited by IBM to work at a US military site in the state of Washington. His work later took him to interface with large IBM accounts in solving their technical issues. He travelled all over the US, Canada, Italy, Japan, Germany and England. He retired in 1991 after 33 years of employment.
He was a member of the IBM Quarter Century Club. He was active in sports and won several IBM Watson Trophies in basketball, softball and horseshoes. He was a member of the Saugerties Bowlers Club and coached in the Saugerties Little League. He was a lifelong NY Yankees and Giants fan. Active in the Trinity Episcopal Church, he served as a Eucharist Minister, Warden and member of the Church Vestry. Always willing to lend a hand in the Strawberry Festival and dinner fundraisers for the Church. In his retirement he enjoyed time with his wife camping with friends and family in their motorhome.
Predeceased by his son, David and brothers, Ralph and the Rev. Benjamin Pfeil. Survivors include his wife, Gail, stepson Jackie Peeler, Jr., his sister, Joyce June of Catskill, his son, Michael of Tx., daughters: Michele Pfeil of Highland and Barbara McDermott of Kingston. Two grandchildren: Derek Pfeil and Keenan McDermott and several nieces and nephews also survive.
His funeral service will be held 10:00 AM Friday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc. Cor. of John & Lafayette Sts., Saugerties. Burial will follow in the Trinity Cemetery.
