GLASCO…. Mary T. Martino, 97, of York St. died Monday, November 13, 2023 at the Health Alliance Hospital, Mary’s Ave. Kingston. Born May 28, 1926 in Glasco she was the daughter of the late Frank and Rose Caruso Petramale.
Mary’s extraordinary life began nearly a century ago in Glasco, NY where she lived for all her life. Her story began “down the hill” where it was known to the community that her family would always have coffee brewing to be shared with anybody who cared to stop by for a cup. This sense of community was embedded in Mary and became the very thing she lived for.
As a young woman Mary took a job with the phone company before beginning her 20 plus year career as a beautician, she worked out of a shop she setup in her basement and was known to treat every client as family, a customer rarely left the house without a great haircut, a belly full of cookies and good conversation.
Mary met her husband, Edward, before he joined the United States Navy during the era of World War II. From the moment they met they knew they had a bright future together, staying in touch, worlds apart, using only letters, they stood the test of time to live a great life for 77 wonderful years filled with love and happiness. Mary and Ed existed for their family and friends. Their door was always open, and it would be offensive if you left their kitchen without having something to eat and a glass of iced tea. For years, Wednesday nights at their home might as well have been a national holiday, if you weren’t there Mary would track you down and have a plate waiting with your name on it, she was even known to serve her famous meatballs and sauce in multiple shifts to cater to everyone that needed to be fed. Any leftovers would be offered to anybody doing work around her neighborhood the next day. Most of the miles on the family cars would be racked up on Sundays where Church, drives and the diner became a tradition that spanned many years. As the years marched on and her family added grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews her giving ways never faded as anyone that walked into her door was offered a sandwich and a couple dollars for the road. Her heart was full of generosity and love for everyone.
Survivors include her husband, Edward P. Martino, Sr., a son, Edward P. Martino, Jr. of Glasco and a daughter, Dina and her husband, PJ Cafaldo of Glasco. A sister, Margaret and her husband, Peter Lang and a brother, Louis Petramale of Glasco, granddaughters, Shanna Pesce and Kerry Martino, four great grandchildren and one great- great grandchild and several nieces and nephews also survive. She was recently predeceased by a beloved grandson, Edward P. Martino, III, a sister, Lillian Mottsey and a brother, Dominick Petramale.
Mary’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Ten Broeck Commons for the love and compassion they showed during her time there.
Her Funeral Procession will form 9:30 AM Monday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc. Cor. of John & Lafayette Sts., Saugerties, thence to St. Joseph’s RC Church in Glasco where at 10:30 AM a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Friends will be received Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Family suggests donations in her memory be made to the Glasco Fire Department or Saint Jude Childrens Research Hospital.
