SAUGERTIES…. Peter J. Koegel, 75, of the Birches died Saturday, February 4, 2023 at the Health Alliance Hospital, Mary’s Ave., Kingston. Born July 31, 1947 in Mineola, NY he was the son of the late Peter and Dorothy VanEtten Koegel.
A graduate of Seaford High School, where Pete was a 3 sport athlete, lettering in football, basketball and baseball. He excelled in baseball and in 1965 was named the MVP of the Journal American Allstar game played in Yankee Stadium between the Metropolitan All Stars and the USA All Stars. The award was presented to him by Mrs. Lou Gehrig. This began a journey that had him signed to play with the Kansas City A’s in 1965, which became the Oakland A’s. He was traded to the Seattle Pilots in 1969 where he made his major league debut. He finished his pro career as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Pete returned to Saugerties where he spent the last 35 years of his life with his family. Survivors include a son, Michael and his wife, Sasha Koegel of MD; daughter, Danielle Koegel; three grandchildren: Shianne Carpenter, Logan Carpenter and Seth Workman, a great grandchild, Coleson Lenhart, two brothers, Warren Koegel of Myrtle Beach, SC and Richard and his wife Valerie Koegel of Saugerties and his beloved nieces and nephews and grand nieces and grand nephews. He was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Elaine Coy Koegel.
His Funeral Service will be held 10:00 AM Wednesday at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc. Cor. of John & Lafayette Sts., Saugerties. Friends will be received on Tuesday from 4:30 PM to 7 PM. Burial will be in the Mt. View Cemetery, Saugerties.
