Richard F. Scism, Jr., 80 also known as “Bud/Buddy” - a devoted husband, proud veteran, and lifelong Hudson Valley resident, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 13, 2026, with his beloved “princess” by his side.
Born on September 4, 1945, in Kingston, New York. He was the son of Richard F., Sr. & Henrietta Van Tassell Scism. Richard carried a deep connection to his hometown throughout his life. He answered the call to serve his country at a young age, joining the United States Air Force as an Airman, where he honorably served during the Vietnam war until his honorable discharge in 1966. His military service reflected his courage, resilience, and unwavering sense of duty. Richard’s time in the Air Force allowed him to travel the world and experience many places and cultures. Despite his journeys, his heart always led him back home to the Hudson Valley, where he spent the years he cherished most in Saugerties, NY.
Richard had a lifelong passion for cars. He loved fixing them, restoring them, and collecting them, and he could often be found listening to old music classics or watching car races and Walker Texas Ranger. These hobbies brought him great joy, and many memories shared with friends and family.
He was deeply committed to serving others. Richard volunteered his time through his church and was especially passionate about supporting the autism community. He also proudly served as a volunteer firefighter with the St. Remy and Saugerties fire
departments, always ready to help when his community needed him.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 36 years, Christina; his two sons from a previous marriage, Michael (Elizabeth) and David (Rebecca); and his grandchildren, Aidan J (A.J.) & Zosia. He also held a special place in his heart for Thomas, Oliver, Saya, Preston & Mateo, his good friend and neighbors Matthew, Jenny, Jonathan & Derek White, and his in-laws in Hong Kong. He also treasured the time spent celebrating holidays and making memories with the Moser family, moments that will be fondly remembered by all.
He was predeceased by his parents, along with his good friend John, his wife Elaine & their daughter Gina Coutant.
Richard’s passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, but his legacy of love, service, and dedication will live on.
A special thank you to Jim & Lisa’s Circle home in Kingston. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Richard’s memory to Hudson Valley Hospice .153 Sawkill Rd, Kingston NY www.hvhospice.org
