Richard Smith Obituary

SAUGERTIES - Richard H. Smith, loving husband, father, Gampy, teacher, and friend, passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 87. Because of his hope and trust in Jesus Christ, we are confident that he is now with his Savior.

The middle son of Arthur and Carol Smith, Richard grew up in Bergenfield, New Jersey, before attending Houghton College, where he met a bright-eyed Janet McKim, his devoted wife of 65 years.

After moving to Saugerties as newlyweds in 1960, “Mr. Smith” began his teaching career at Saugerties High School, where his kindness, humor, and notoriety for storytelling (which he swore was intentional) made him a beloved educator to hundreds of students over his four-decade career.

Beyond the lives touched by his infectious passion for teaching and “did you know?” factoids, Mr. Smith became a local legend for his infamously accurate SaugertiesWeather.com snow day predictions—earning the trust of thousands of hopeful students (and teachers!).

A man of many passions, Richard was a skilled fly fisher; a lover of both the harmonica and trumpet (which he played in high school and during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade—twice!); a weather enthusiast; and an avid hiker—a hobby he subjected his children and grandchildren to during countless treks through the mountains of New Hampshire, where he spent his summers for over 60 years.

Despite his many hobbies and gifts, Richard was first a man of faith, a devoted and patient husband to Janet, a loving and steady father to Mark and Jeff, and a proud and playful Gampy and Great-Gampy to Zachary, Taylor, Griffin, Paris, and Archer.

An Elder and Deacon at Grace Community Church, Richard’s life was one of such incredible fullness, yet he possessed a seemingly endless capacity to serve those around him, his life a true testament to his faith in the Lord.

Richard leaves behind not just a family who adored him, but a legacy of lives changed by his teaching, his humor, and his unwavering presence. While we grieve his loss, we rejoice knowing he is now at peace and in the presence of the Lord he served so faithfully.

A celebration of life will be held at 2pm on Saturday, August 9th at Grace Community Church- 160 Seremma Court Lake Katrine, NY 12449.   Visitation will be held on Saturday from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM at the Church.
