Stephen Ryan Obituary

Stephen Edward Ryan, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2025, at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie, NY.  He was born on January 3, 1943, in Kingston, to the late Stephen Edward and Marie (Aiello) Ryan.

Steve is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Jo Ann Ryan. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter. He was a guiding light to his children, Stephen Edward (Kimberly) of Merritt Island, Fl.  Richard (Jessica) Ryan of Accord, NY and Maryanne (Joseph) Beichert of Kingston, NY.  Steve’s legacy continues through his ten grandchildren: Sebastian Ryan (Elizabeth), Stefan Ryan (Emily), Keiran Ryan (Danielle), Nicolas Topple (Stephanie), Alexa Myer (Jamie), Richard (Ava), Ava Vangorder, Emily Beichert, Joseph Beichert, Ryan Beichert and five great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his sister, Cheryl (Robert) Brady, and his niece, Rebecca (Clay) Mattson and brother in law James (Carol) Drury and many cousins.  Steve was predeceased by his nephew, James Drury.

Steve graduated from Union College with a Bachelors Degree in Business with a concentration in Economics.  His professional life was marked by his dedication to communication and public service.  He worked in telecommunications ensuring that connections were made and voices were heard.  For 38 years he worked for AT&T at Hallihan Hill in Kingston as well as in White Plains, NY.  In the late 90’s he continued his career at Lucent Technologies, in NJ where he and Jo Ann enjoyed their weekends on Belmar Beach, NJ relaxing.  Later, he served as a dispatcher for the Town of Saugerties Police Department, a role in which he was respected for his calm demeanor.  After retiring from telecommunications, he was appointed as Town of Saugerties Tax Assessor and later on Special Projects Assistant for Nick Woerner with Town of Ulster.

A devout Catholic, Steve was a long-time parishioner of St. Joseph's Church in Glasco, NY and served as a lector and Eucharistic Minister at St. John the Evangelist Church in Centerville, NY.  His faith was a cornerstone of his existence, and he lived it out through his involvement with the Holy Name Society.

Beyond his family and faith, Steve found joy in the simple pleasures of life.  He was known for enjoying pizza or coffee at QuickCheck with his Glasco buddies, where laughter and camaraderie were always on the menu. He took great pride growing up in Glasco, NY.  These moments, though seemingly small, were a reflection of Steve’s ability to find happiness in the everyday and to create lasting memories with those around him in his small hometown he loved.
