CATSKILL - Terry L. Mertzeis, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2025, in Catskill, NY, surrounded by his family. Born on January 1, 1956, in West Mifflin, PA, Terry was the son of the late William and Elizabeth Lloyd Mertzeis. Terry was predeceased by his best buddy, Troy and his dear friend, Patrick Quillen. His journey through life was marked by a loving heart, a remarkable knowledge for all things mechanical, a warm sense of humor, and a quick wit that was unmatched.
Terry was blessed with a beautiful family and is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Robin. Together, they raised three daughters. Daddy to Keri (Dean) Hough of Catskill, Teryl (Lasco) Nawezi of MD, and Kayla (Joshua) Godfrey of West Coxsackie, who affectionately called him "Papa." His grandchildren, Logan and Dakota Hough, Aiden Godfrey, and Bria and Kasen Nawezi, lovingly knew him as "Grumpy," a testament to his playful spirit and the joy he found in his role as a grandfather.
He leaves behind his brothers, William (Debbie) Mertzeis and Scott (Candy) Mertzeis. Terry's nieces and nephews held a special place in his heart, and to them, he was fondly known as "Uncle Turkey." His dear friends, Lance (Elizabeth) Dubois, Glenn (Susan) Meyer, and Myron (Gracie Burns) Wisniewski, will miss his camaraderie and the laughter that accompanied their time together. Terry's special dog, Bailey, was a constant companion and brought him immeasurable happiness.
Terry's professional life was spent as a maintenance technician at Treasure Chest in Saugerties and Charles River Laboratories in Stone Ridge, where he was respected for his skill and dedication. His work was not just a job but a reflection of his need to fix, build and improve everything around him.
An avid outdoorsman, Terry found solace and adventure in the Catskill Mountains, often camping in his motorhome and exploring the natural beauty of the area. His love for boating was equally matched by his passion for tinkering with engines. A lifelong fan of the Steelers, he shared his love of football with friends and family, bringing them together to cheer on his favorite team.
Terry was the epitome of a "girl dad," always supporting and empowering his daughters in every aspect of their lives. His guidance and love shaped them into the strong, independent women they are today. Those who knew Terry would describe him as funny, loving, and handy—the kind of person who could brighten a room with his humor, warm it with his kindness, and fix anything that was broken.
Friends will be received Saturday from 3:00 PM-5:00PM with a service at 5:00PM at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home, Inc. Cor. of John & Lafayette Sts., Saugerties. Expressions of condolence may be shared with the family on Terry's Tribute Wall at SeamonWilseyFuneralHome.com
