Wendy Backus Obituary

Wendy Jane Backus, 74, of Saugerties, New York, passed away on March 4, 2026, at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, New York, following a sudden heart attack. Born on August 31, 1951, in Kingston, New York, she was the daughter of the late Albert Perks and Jane Perks. A lifelong resident of the Hudson Valley, Wendy lived a life defined by education, adventure, and an enduring love for her family.

A dedicated and passionate educator, Wendy was a graduate of the State University of New York at New Paltz, where she earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Education. She spent her professional career teaching at Coxsackie Elementary School. Her warmth, generosity, and kindness made her a beloved figure in the classroom, where she left a lasting impact on the many students she taught throughout her tenure.

Wendy’s adventurous spirit was evident to all who knew her. She was always up for new experiences and possessed a deep appreciation for the natural world and travel. As a proud member of the Catskill 3500 Hiking Club, she explored the region's peaks with determination and joy. Her love for the outdoors was shared deeply with her husband, Thomas. Together, they spent countless days at their cabin in the Adirondacks, where they enjoyed canoeing on quiet waters and cross-country skiing through the winter months. Wendy spent time traveling around the globe with her husband and friends. When not exploring new places, Wendy cultivated beauty at home through her love of gardening and watercolor painting.

Above all, Wendy was devoted to her family. She married her sweetheart, Thomas Backus, in 1983, and together they raised two children, Julia and Samuel. Wendy was the heart of her family’s traditions and famously hosted Christmas every year, filling her home with celebration and love. In recent years, she found immense joy in spending time with her granddaughter, Penny Starkey. Together they read countless books, played, and went for walks in the woods.

Wendy is survived by her husband, Thomas Backus; her son, Samuel Backus; her daughter, Julia Starkey, son-in-law Cole Starkey, and her granddaughter, Penny Starkey. She is also survived by her brothers, Steven Perks and William Perks, and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Jane Perks.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Wendy's life and remember her warm and loving spirit. Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. Donations in memory of Wendy can be made to the Saugerties Public Library.
