Carlton "Carl" (Cart) Sperl, 88 passed away Thursday January 26th at Benedictine Hospital, Kingston following a brief illness. Carl was the youngest son of the late Iva (Mollie) Brooks and Leonard Sperl, Sr. He was born January 9, 1935 on the Winston Farm in Saugerties where his father was employed.
As a boy he attended the one-room schoolhouse in Veteran. He enjoyed trapping, fishing and hunting while growing up. He graduated in 1952 from Saugerties High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army. His first job was at the F.L. Russell Corp. in Mount Marion. Following this, he was employed by I.B.M. of Kingston and Poughkeepsie for more than 35 1/2 years.
He was a lifetime member of both the Saugerties Fish & Game Club and the Centerville Volunteer Fire Co. Throughout his life he continued to enjoy both hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed country music and card playing with the "old timers" at the "Clubhouse" in Fish Creek.
He was a member of the High Woods Reformed Church. For years he worked at the church suppers and the annual Labor Day Fair. He also attended church services at the Shady U.M. Church with family.
He is survived by his son, Jeffrey (Jeff) Sperl of Saugerties as well as a daughter Bonnie (Mark) Mills of Catskill. He is also survived by his grandson Brett Mills of Mass. Also surviving is his brother Robert of Saugerties and Winston Gedicks of Saugerties who he thought of as another grandson. Many friends and loving nieces and nephews also survive.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Mary in April of 2020 after nearly 60 years of marriage. He was also predeceased by his sister, Eleanor Longendyke and brothers, Woodrow, Sr., William and Leonard Sperl, Jr. A nephew Woodrow Sperl, Jr. also predeceased him.
Calling hours will be on Sunday January 29 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Seamon Wilsey Funeral Home in Saugerties.
The funeral will be on Monday January 30 at 2 p.m. at the funeral home conducted by Elder Don Lee of the Rochester Reformed Church in Accord, NY.
