She was born in Hanover, Germany ,Helene Eliese, on February 2, 1916 to the late Franz and Leonore Peter Boltz. Sent to this country at 12 years old alone on the steamship Columbus for a better life, she was met at Ellis Island by family friends that she worked for as a mother’s helper in exchange for room and board. When her parents were able to join her they all settled in the German section of New York City. It was there,as a young woman, she met and married her husband of over 55 years Carl Person. They moved to Avenel,New Jersey where she became a homemaker and together they raised 2 daughters Margret and Rose. After Carl retired they built a home in Blue Mountain and settled in Saugerties. She enjoyed knitting and a good cup of coffee.
