I met Sally at a gathering in Kolkata through the American Institute in Indian Studies back in 2009, where I was studying Bangla, fresh out of college. I remember laughing and having a wonderful time chatting with her, and also thinking how I had never met anyone like her before. I was touched and honestly surprised that she, so much older, wiser, and cooler with all this rich life experience and bigger than life presence, stayed in touch and reconnected with me when I came back to New York, invited me to a memorable lunch with her mom, and asked about working together on a project of Bengalis in New York and their connection to Baul music. It was amazing to see how passionate she was about Bengali folk music, and it made me want to learn more about a piece of my heritage I hadn't known much about. Despite the passage of many years, I was moved when she messaged me after recently finishing law school to send her well wishes. I was saddened to recently hear of Sally's passing, and send all my best wishes to her family and loved ones - may you keep the best of her character alive! My deepest sympathies, 

We lose a beautiful legend, and, a pretty neat person too! My condolences too all. Rest in peace.
